Eid-el-Kabir: Niger govt declares low-key celebration to mourn flood victims

The Niger State Government has announced a a quiet Eid-el-Kabir celebration across the state to honour victims of the recent flood disaster in Mokwa and nearby communities.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago also ordered the suspension of all elaborate Sallah activities, including Hawan Bariki, Durbar, and other celebrations in all emirates of the state.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman on Wednesday.

He said, “This decision is to show respect for the victims of the tragic flood and to allow time for mourning, prayers, and reflection.”

The governor urged citizens to pray for the souls of those who died and to support the victims through acts of charity.

“We call on the good people of Niger State to use this Sallah period to pray for the departed and to reach out with love and support to affected communities,” the statement added.

It has been reported that the floods killed over 200 people and left more than 500 missing in the state.
