Judge Rules Mass Firings, Loan Transfers Unlawful and Disruptive

In a dramatic legal development, a federal judge in Boston has blocked the Trump administration’s controversial attempt to dismantle the United States Department of Education. The ruling, delivered by U.S. District Judge Myong Joun, a Biden appointee, halts plans to fire over 2,000 Education Department employees and transfer federal student loan management to the Small Business Administration.

The Trump administration’s March 20 executive order had directed sweeping changes aimed at shrinking the department’s footprint—moves that critics say amount to a backdoor plan to abolish the agency entirely.

Judge Joun’s blistering injunction made it clear that the administration’s actions were far from a simple reorganization. “The idea that Defendants’ actions are merely a ‘reorganization’ is plainly not true,” he wrote, pointing out that the cuts and restructuring made it “effectively impossible for the Department to carry out its statutorily mandated functions.”

At the heart of the challenge was a coalition of state attorneys general, public schools, and educational nonprofits, who argued that only Congress—not the president—can dismantle a federal department. The plaintiffs were represented by Democracy Forward, whose president, Skye Perryman, hailed the ruling as a victory for American values and educational access. “Instead of taking a wrecking ball to our nation’s best values and our chance at a better future, this administration should be focused on how to improve education and opportunities for all,” she stated.

The judge’s ruling also cast doubt on whether the administration was making a genuine legislative effort to close the Department. “There is no evidence that Defendants are pursuing a ‘legislative goal’ or otherwise working with Congress,” the decision noted, adding that the proposed firings had not improved efficiency but rather caused dysfunction.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, welcomed the judgment, declaring it a repudiation of what she called one of the administration’s “first illegal, and consequential, acts: abolishing the federal role in education.”

The court’s decision is temporary, pending further litigation, but it significantly slows one of President Trump’s most ideologically driven attempts to reshape the federal government’s role in education.

As debates rage on in Washington over the scope of executive power and the future of public education, this ruling underscores the judiciary’s crucial role in maintaining the balance of powers and protecting institutions from unilateral political overreach.
