EVANSTON, IL – Northwestern University has announced plans to significantly expand its Jewish studies program, following a major anonymous donation made in the midst of ongoing federal investigations into allegations of antisemitic harassment on its campus.
The announcement, made Monday by University President Michael Schill, comes as the institution faces scrutiny from the Trump administration’s Department of Education, which earlier this year threatened “potential enforcement actions” against Northwestern over its handling of antisemitism-related complaints. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has also launched a parallel probe into whether the university has upheld nondiscrimination policies on the basis of race, color, and national origin.
While the amount of the anonymous donation has not been disclosed, President Schill said it will support the university’s efforts to foster respectful, inclusive dialogue and promote deeper understanding of Jewish identity and culture.
“Recent events in our world highlight the urgent need for more education about Judaism and the experiences of Jewish people,” Schill said. “The generosity of this gift will help ensure Jewish students always feel a sense of belonging at Northwestern.”
The funding is expected to support academic course expansion, student enrollment, and cultural programming under Northwestern’s Jewish studies department. The curriculum currently offers a major and minor covering Jewish philosophy, literature, Holocaust studies, Israel’s politics, and Hebrew and Yiddish language instruction.
The donation will also benefit programming in collaboration with Northwestern Hillel, a religious and cultural organization fostering Jewish community life on campus. According to Michael Simon, executive director of Hillel, the goal is to create “a vibrant atmosphere that engages and inspires young adults” and equips students with a more profound understanding of Judaism throughout their lives.
In recent months, Northwestern has found itself at the center of a political and public relations storm, with several of its federal grants suspended and its academic policies questioned amid the investigations. Critics say the probes have added political pressure to campuses across the U.S., especially institutions that have been caught in the crossfire of student activism, identity politics, and administrative policy changes.
Despite the controversy, the university insists it is cooperating fully with federal authorities and is committed to ensuring all students—regardless of background—feel supported and safe.
As universities nationwide contend with rising concerns about campus culture and free speech, Northwestern’s move signals an attempt to both comply with federal expectations and safeguard its academic integrity and student welfare.
