In a statement, the agency said the exercise aligns with its mandate under the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which empowers it to regulate and enforce standards for goods in the Nigerian market.

Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, said the destruction was a necessary step to prevent the circulation of unsafe products that pose a serious risk to public health and safety.

“As an agency, we take our responsibility seriously, and today’s action is a clear demonstration of our resolve to rid the market of dangerous, unregulated goods,” he said. “This is a firm reminder to all stakeholders—from producers to consumers—that SON will not allow substandard goods to thrive in Nigeria.”

Dr. Okeke particularly emphasized the danger of expired tyres on Nigerian roads, noting that tyres have a lifespan of four years, after which they can easily burst and cause fatal accidents. He also highlighted the impact of improper storage and exposure to extreme temperatures on tyre quality.
