A forthcoming book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson has revealed that aides to former U.S. President Joe Biden were so concerned about his declining physical health during his 2024 re-election campaign that they discussed the possibility of using a wheelchair to assist his mobility. According to the book, “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” Biden’s aides were alarmed by his noticeable physical deterioration, including his halting walk.

The authors report that Biden’s personal physician, Kevin O’Connor, expressed worries about the toll of the presidency on Biden’s health, warning that another bad fall could necessitate the use of a wheelchair. Despite these concerns, Biden’s team ultimately decided that a wheelchair would not be politically feasible during the campaign, fearing it would harm his public image.

The book, set to be released on May 20, also claims that Biden’s team took several measures to reduce his risk of falling, including shortening the distances he had to walk, using handrails at events, and having him wear sneakers instead of dress shoes. The authors further detail a shift in Biden’s campaign strategy, focusing on limiting his physical exposure and changing his briefing style to help him remember his steps.

While Biden’s camp has dismissed the book’s claims as exaggerated, a spokesperson admitted that the former president did experience age-related changes but argued that these changes did not impair his ability to govern. The spokesperson emphasized that despite his advanced age, Biden remained an effective leader throughout his presidency.

This revelation has drawn comparisons to Nigeria’s own leadership concerns, particularly regarding President Bola Tinubu, whose health has been a subject of national debate. Critics of President Tinubu have often raised questions about his fitness for office, citing his frequent foreign medical trips and visibly declining mobility. The situation has raised concerns about the transparency of health information concerning Nigerian leaders and the impact of such issues on governance.

The story of Biden’s final campaign and the measures taken to manage his public appearances highlights a global challenge: the delicate balance between protecting a leader’s image and ensuring transparency about their health. As both Nigeria and the United States grapple with questions about the fitness of their leaders, the demand for greater transparency and accountability remains a critical issue.
