In a dramatic twist in America’s beer market, Modelo, the Mexican-made brew that recently dethroned Bud Light as the top-selling beer in the United States, is now facing unexpected headwinds. At the heart of this challenge are U.S. trade and immigration policies under President Donald Trump — policies that could shake Modelo’s stronghold on the American market.

Modelo’s ascent to the top was swift yet solid. In 2023, a consumer backlash against Bud Light, sparked by a controversial marketing campaign, opened the door for Modelo to claim the crown. Its success was fueled by two key factors: America’s growing interest in imported beers and a loyal Hispanic consumer base that views Modelo as a cultural favorite. But these same factors now seem vulnerable.

A Costly Tariff War

One major threat comes from a 25% tariff on aluminum, which directly impacts Constellation Brands, the parent company of Modelo. Nearly 39% of Modelo’s beer is sold in aluminum cans, making it heavily exposed to the price hike. Analysts estimate that Constellation faces a staggering $1 billion in annual costs due to these tariffs. While the company has managed to absorb the impact so far, analysts warn that continued pressure may eventually force price increases — a risky move in a price-sensitive market.

Immigration Crackdown and Consumer Anxiety

Yet the aluminum tariff is just one part of the problem. President Trump’s aggressive immigration policies are creating a climate of fear among Hispanic consumers, who make up a significant portion of Modelo’s customer base. Worries about immigration raids, job losses, and economic uncertainty are driving some Hispanic shoppers to cut back on non-essential purchases, including beer.

“Hispanic consumers are feeling the pressure, and that could ripple out to their purchasing habits,” warns Bump Williams, an alcohol industry consultant. His recent survey of Hispanic families found that two-thirds were either changing their shopping habits or avoiding certain stores due to fear of immigration checks.

Rising Competition: Michelob Ultra’s Silent Surge

While Modelo navigates these challenges, Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Michelob Ultra is making quiet but significant gains. Known for its low-calorie, health-conscious image, Michelob Ultra has been steadily growing in popularity, benefiting from a broader trend toward wellness-oriented products. In fact, Michelob Ultra is now being hailed as the company’s “flagship beer,” a title once firmly held by Bud Light.

Beer’s Battle for the Crown: A Volatile Market

The American beer industry is now a battlefield defined by shifting consumer preferences, political pressures, and brand strategies. While Modelo’s brand remains strong, the looming threat of tariff-driven price hikes and the chilling effect of immigration crackdowns could see its crown slipping. Michelob Ultra, with its health-conscious appeal, stands ready to capitalize.

But this is not just a tale of Modelo versus Michelob. It is a story of a turbulent market where consumer loyalty is fragile, and political decisions have direct consequences on buying habits.

The coming months will determine whether Modelo can maintain its position or whether another challenger will seize the throne. For more in-depth analysis of this and other global business stories, stay tuned to Newspot Nigeria.
