🔥 Long-serving U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky has announced that she will not seek re-election in 2026, bringing an end to her remarkable 26-year career in the U.S. Congress. Schakowsky, 80, who has represented a reliably Democratic district on Chicago’s Far North Side and north and northwest suburbs since 1999, made the announcement at an “Ultimate Women’s Power Luncheon” event at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk on May 5, 2025.

💬 “As much as I love and have loved being in the Congress of the United States, such an incredible, incredible privilege… I have made the decision that I am not going to seek re-election this time,” Schakowsky told a crowd of about 1,000 attendees.

🔴 Schakowsky, known for her unwavering advocacy for women’s rights, consumer protection, and progressive policies, has been a fixture in Illinois politics for decades. She first won the 9th Congressional District seat in 1998, defeating two prominent opponents, including billionaire JB Pritzker, in a competitive primary. Throughout her tenure, Schakowsky became a prominent voice for progressive causes, including health care reform, gun control, and workers’ rights.

💡 The news of her retirement has already sparked discussions about potential successors. Social media content creator Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive critic of the far right who recently moved to Illinois, has declared her candidacy and even outraised Schakowsky in the first quarter of this year. Other potential candidates include Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, state Sen. Laura Fine, and state Rep. Hoan Huynh.
