The investigation ordered by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun over the alleged infiltration of the National Assembly by the Russia’s KGB (Komitet Gosudarstveennov Bezopasnosti) the former Soviet Security agency appeared to have run into a quandary.
Checks by Newspot on Wednesday revealed that the Police headquarters invited a Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Sunday Karimi based on a petition forwarded to it by his colleagues from Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In her petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police dated 5th March, 2025, Natasha alleged that Karimi raised the alarm that the notorious KGB agents from Russia had infiltrated the National Assembly on her invitation thereby posing a national security threat.
According to her, the Senator shared the information on the WatsApp group of Senators which she is member of titled: “KGB Agent Group Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy” on 28th February, 2025, shortly after she was suspended for six months.
Natasha pointed out in the petition to the IG that the information was false while urging the Police not to treat the false alarm raised by Senator Karimi with kid gloves, noting that, “No nation can afford to ignore the presence of such a group within its legislative body.”
On Monday 25th March, Senator Karimi honoured the invitation to answer to his claim as checks revealed that he had a session with the Police where he was said to have admitted to the information on Senators Group Watsapp.
Speaking, the Senator said: “Yes, as a Senator I cannot deny the information, but it was up to the Police and other security agents to act on a petition against me by Senator Natasha not only to investigate me, but my claims.
“I honoured Police investigation on Monday to state my own side of the post on Watsapp group of Senators and I believe my session with Police was positive.
The police confirmed a session with Senator Kaimi, and said the petitioner, Natasha, was also invited. “We reached out to her after the session with Senator Karimi. We wanted to hear from her too but she was yet to honour their invitation as of Wednesday and we believe that she would honour the invitation at a later date.
Reacting to the development, Natasha said she wasn’t aware of invitation to the Police headquarters over her petition.
“I could not have rebuffed the Police invitation over a petition I wrote. I wasn’t invited, she said.
