Plateau unrest: Residents flee as religious clash claims multiple lives

A clash between traditional worshippers and Muslim youths in Shimankar community, Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State, has resulted in numerous injuries and the destruction of several houses.

Religious and commercial establishments were also set on fire.

The unrest began on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, despite the intervention of security forces, including police officers and soldiers.

According to local sources, the violence broke out following a disagreement between traditional worshippers passing through the area and some Muslim youths.

Amid the chaos, residents, many of them women and children—were seen fleeing for safety, while business activities came to a halt.

Major Samson Zhakom, spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), assured that he would engage with relevant authorities regarding the situation.

Residents have called for the immediate deployment of additional security forces to restore order in the community.
