NEWARK, N.J. — A shocking incident unfolded on Friday evening in Newark, where a 14-year-old opened fire on police officers, resulting in the death of Officer Joseph Azcona, 25, and leaving another officer injured. The chaotic scene witnessed by local residents saw officers rushing down a busy street, followed by a barrage of gunfire.
Officer Azcona, a dedicated member of the Newark police intelligence team and a five-year veteran of the force, was ambushed while in his vehicle during an operation aimed at apprehending a suspect involved in an illegal weapons investigation. Newark’s Director of Public Safety, Emanuel Miranda, stated that Azcona “didn’t even get a chance to step out of the vehicle before he was struck.”
