Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni (CON, COMN), has been commended by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for his administration’s steadfast commitment to transparency, accountability, and due process in governance.
During a courtesy visit to Governor Buni’s office in Damaturu, Mr. Linus Gubbi, the newly appointed Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Borno and Yobe States, lauded the state’s achievements in promoting good governance. Mr. Gubbi noted that Yobe State’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, citing awards for transparency and accountability received under the State Fiscal Transparency Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) program—a World Bank initiative—and recognition from the Association of Public Procurement Practitioners of Nigeria.
“We are on a preventive and public enlightenment drive, and I must commend your administration for its efforts in accountability and transparency, which have become a model for others to follow,” Mr. Gubbi said.
In his remarks, Governor Buni highlighted the importance of strong, independent institutions in tackling corruption, misappropriation, and diversion of public funds. He pointed to the establishment of the state Bureau on Public Procurement as a key measure in curbing over-invoicing in procurement and contract awards. “Its independence from government interference has strengthened its effectiveness,” the governor emphasized.
Governor Buni also credited the state House of Assembly for its oversight functions and prudent resource management, which have facilitated the execution of people-centered projects across Yobe State. In a bid to further bolster anti-corruption efforts, he directed ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to collaborate with the ICPC by establishing anti-corruption and transparency units and training finance officers to prevent financial leakages.
The governor expressed his sincere appreciation for the ICPC’s recognition and assured that his administration would remain steadfast in its commitment to promoting transparency and fighting corruption.
