Kebbi Governor Lauds FG for Completing NHRC Offices

Birnin Kebbi – Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has commended the Federal Government for its commitment to human rights by constructing and completing National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) offices across select states. Speaking at the commissioning of the Kebbi NHRC office in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, Governor Idris, represented by Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, highlighted the significant strides made under President Bola Tinubu’s administration to enhance human rights planning and implementation nationwide.

Governor Idris praised the harmonious collaboration between the Federal Government, the Minister of Justice, and NHRC leadership, emphasizing that the initiative reinforces the government’s dedication to promoting and protecting the rights of Nigerians. “We wish to commend the Federal Government for providing this befitting office for the commission,” he said. He also announced that his administration would support the office by connecting it to the national grid and providing an operational vehicle, in addition to appointing a Special Adviser on Human Rights Protection and Enforcement.

In his address, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) reiterated that the government respects the NHRC’s independence while providing a supportive environment for the commission to carry out its mandate. He affirmed that since the inception of the current administration, there has been no interference with the commission’s operations.

Chairperson of the NHRC Governing Council, Dr. Salamatu Suleiman, acknowledged the federal support that facilitated the construction of nine new offices since 2019. She urged the National Assembly and the budget office to allocate additional funds to complete the remaining state offices, ensuring comprehensive protection of citizens’ rights across Nigeria.

Executive Secretary of NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, stressed that the commission’s mandate is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative aimed at building a society where dignity, freedom, and justice prevail.
