In a shocking development, Remi Abass, the former chairman of Irewole Local Government in Osun State, was fatally shot by unknown gunmen at the local government secretariat in Ikire on Monday.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants launched their attack in broad daylight, unleashing multiple gunshots at the secretariat. A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the scene as “sudden and chaotic,” with people scrambling for safety during the incident.
SP Yemisi Opalola, the Police Public Relations Officer for Osun State Police Command, has confirmed the incident. The Command has initiated investigations and assured the public of their commitment to apprehending the perpetrators and maintaining peace in the area.
Notably, Abass was among the local government chairmen who were removed from office following a Federal High Court ruling in Osogbo in November 2022.
The incident has raised concerns about security in the region, with authorities working to uncover the motives behind this brazen attack.
