Abeokuta, Nigeria – In a heartfelt gathering at the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Ake, on February 13, 2025, the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, alongside state dignitaries, paid their respects to Mama Bassey Ekeng Akinde in a ceremonious farewell that celebrated her impactful life and legacy.

The somber yet celebratory service was attended by prominent figures of the Anglican Communion, including the Primate of All Nigeria, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, represented by the Dean of the Church, Most Reverend Blessing Eyindah. The gathering also included former Primate Most Reverend Jasper Akinola, along with four retired Archbishops, two serving Archbishops, and an assembly of 35 Bishops, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Mama Bassey.

Representing the Ogun State government, Deputy Governor Noimot Salako Oyedele joined the congregation, with former Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun also in attendance. Their presence, along with that of numerous dignitaries, highlighted the widespread impact Mama Bassey had across both ecclesiastical and civic spheres.

In his moving homily, Most Reverend Eyindah spoke eloquently about the virtues that pave the way to eternal life, a fitting tribute to Mama Bassey’s devout faith and compassionate spirit. The service, lasting 75 minutes, was a testament to her unwavering commitment to her faith and her community.

Retired Archbishop Professor Adebayo Akinde, the chief mourner, displayed dignified strength throughout the service. With the support of a walker, he proceeded to the graveside to say a final goodbye to his beloved wife of 53 years, marking a poignant moment of love and loss.
