The Lagos Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, on Thursday, announced that the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Bill has been enacted to ban illegal organ harvesting.
Pedro said there are four additional laws, including the Consumer Protection Law, Lagos Enforcement Training Institute Laws, Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Laws, and Fire and Rescue Service Laws.
According to him, the Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplantation Law tackles illegal organ trade and unethical medical practices.
He described it as a revolutionary framework for regulating organ harvesting and transplantation in the state, noting that the law forbids organ harvesting without proper authorization and prohibits advertisements for the sale of human organs.
“This legislation protects individuals from exploitation and ensures medical procedures adhere to the highest ethical standards.
Violators risk up to 10 years imprisonment or a fine of up to N10 million,” Pedro said.
