The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has issued an urgent alert about counterfeit Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg capsules that are believed to be causing serious adverse reactions.
The agency has recalled batch number 4C639001, which has a manufacturing date of March 2024 and an expiry date of February 2027, and is urging the public to stay alert.
During a press briefing in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye announced that the matter would be reported to the WHO Global Surveillance and Monitoring System due to concerns that the counterfeit product may have entered Nigeria from abroad.
She mentioned that NAFDAC has collected samples for laboratory testing and has called in stakeholders, including Quality Control and Production Managers, for further questioning.
Prof Adeyeye assured the public of the agency’s rigorous monitoring efforts while advising consumers to stop using the suspected batch and healthcare providers to verify the authenticity of their supplies.
“The analysis is currently pending determination while the investigation is ongoing.
“Meanwhile, the Quality Control and Production Managers have been invited for further investigation.
“The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, the agency that issues site licenses for the site and the Pharmacist in charge has been notified,” she stated.
