Taraba University students suspend planned protest, gives state govt ultimatum

Students of the Taraba State University, TSU, have temporarily suspended their planned peaceful protest in the state.

The students also gave the state government until Friday to address their demands, noting that the strike originally slated for Tueday was suspended following the indefinite strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in Taraba Chapter.

The ASUU strike had disrupted examinations and final-year academic activities in the institution, located in Jalingo. the state capital

The President of the National Union of Taraba State Students, NUTASS, Aliyu Sulaiman, had urged the government to act swiftly to resolve the crisis and facilitate the students’ return to class.

Also, the chairman of the Joint Campus Council of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Taraba Chapter, Nungamiya Galeya Lodiya, warned that if the government fails to meet their demands by the deadline, students would launch protests and shut down all federal roads within the state.

The ongoing strike by lecturers, was necessitated by the longstanding grievances over the alleged unmet demands by the state government, according to the union.

The standoff, at the time of filing this report, has left students frustrated, with the student Union President, Rose Okoh Agada expressing disappointment that students are unfairly caught in the middle of the dispute.

“The government and lecturers must find a way to end this crisis; we cannot continue to suffer for their disagreements,” Agada stated.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Students Representative Assembly, SRA,
Norbert Abeh, has called on both parties to prioritize the interests of students and resolve the impasse promptly.
