Prayers are pouring in after more than 50 people were killed during a stampede at a soccer event in Nzerekore Southern Guinea
The soccer match featured a controversial red card in the 82nd minute. Following the controversial penalty, fans began throwing stones onto the field, in protest of the call.
Police in the stadium then used tear gas, in an attempt to calm things down. But it had the opposite effect.
Fans spilled out of the stadium, essentially causing a stampede, that took the lives of 56 people.
Bah Oury, the country’s prime minister, released a statement on what happened.
“The government deplores the incidents that marred the football match between the Labe and Nzerekore teams this afternoon in Nzerekore. During the stampede, victims were recorded.
“The regional authorities are working to restore calm and serenity among the population. The government is monitoring the development of the situation and reiterates its call for calm so that hospital services are not hindered in providing first aid to the injured.
“The moral authorities of the city are requested to also contribute to the restoration of social tranquility. The government will publish a press release when it has collected all the relevant information on these unfortunate incidents,”
Prayers are pouring in for the country.
“Sending prayers to all those in Southern Guinea who were impacted by the stampede that occurred during a soccer game in Nzerekore,” one fan wrote.
“My deepest condolences to the grieving families , and may the souls of the departed rest in peace,” one fan added.
