An alleged relative of one of the victims told the outlet that Babcock had been living at the residence where the murders had taken place.

It was stated by Lorain County Sheriff Captain Robert Vansant that the nine-year-old Alex Louks and his mother, Risa Louks, were discovered dead inside their Broadway Avenue home around 7:47 a.m. on Wednesday. Vansant said the investigation is still ongoing, however, preliminary evidence seems to suggest that it was a murder-suicide with the mother fatally shooting her son, before starting a fire and then shooting herself. Both people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Vansant stated that firefighters arrived at the home after the alarm company notified authorities of smoke in the structure.“When they went in and extinguished the very small blaze, they discovered two bodies inside one of the bedrooms,” said Vansant. No one else is believed to have been in the building.

The outlet reported that Alex had been a third grader at Powers Elementary School in the Amherst Exempted Village School District. In response to the grizzly murder, the district issued a statement that they would have additional counselors and mental health professionals available for both students and teachers.

“Today we mourn the tragic loss of one of our beloved third grade students at Powers Elementary School,” the district said in a statement released Wednesday.”At this time, the district is not able to release the student’s name as we are taking direction from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office but we want to express our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by today’s events,” they continued. “As you begin to process today’s events, we understand that this news is overwhelming and difficult for many of our students, families, and staff.”
