Manchester United’s board feel Ruben Amorim possesses the coaching ability to revive the fortunes of a number of players in the first-team squad.
The Portuguese coach was appointed earlier this month on an initial two-and-a-half-year deal.
Amorim will take charge of United for the first time when the Red Devils visit Ipswich Town on Sunday.
The international break, as well as visa issues, mean Amorim has had little time on the training field to work with his new squad.
But the former Sporting boss is a hands-on coach and United’s board feel this will benefit many members of the squad.
The Telegraph say the board hope this can be the case for Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount.
Signed for a combined £112m in 2023, the pair have struggled at times at Old Trafford.
While there’s enough to suggest the Dane could be a long-term success at the Theatre of Dreams, Mount has scored just once in a season-and-a-half in the north-west.
He spent large chunks of last season on the sidelines through injury, and has already missed two months of this season.
But Mount possesses the pressing ability that Amorim wants to adopt at Old Trafford and he is well accustomed to playing under a back three, having thrived under Thomas Tuchel during his spell at Chelsea.
It’s part of a wider push from United’s board to stem the flow of excess investment into the squad.
Having spent £200m last summer, the board feel the squad is in a good place and want to see it better used by their new head coach.
Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Hojlund, Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo are all aged 21 or under, while the average age of the squad is low.
It’s felt there is significant room to grow.
