The National Patriotic Coalition (NPC) has criticized the recent local government election in Kano State, describing it as a “sham” and a clear affront to democratic principles.
Newspot reports that despite a Federal High Court ruling that invalidated the candidacy of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) contenders, observers allege that Governor Abba Yusuf proceeded with the election in direct defiance of judicial authority.
In a statement signed by Kunle Solomon, the NPC asserted that the results—where the NNPP claimed victory across all 44 chairmanships and 484 councillorship seats—lack legitimacy.
Solomon described the process as “a comedy taken too far” and referred to it as a “kangaroo election” that saw the participation of underage children.
The statement criticized Governor Yusuf’s decision to proceed with the polls, asserting that he lacks both preparation and understanding of the electoral process.
“The National Patriotic Coalition (NPC) strongly condemns the recent local government elections in Kano State as a sham and a blatant disregard for democracy,” the statement read.
“By ignoring a Federal High Court ruling that disqualified NNPP candidates, Governor Yusuf has demonstrated contempt for the rule of law and judicial authority. This contravenes Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that the rulings of the Supreme Court and other federal courts be respected across the federation by all individuals and authorities.”
The NPC further asserted that election materials were either not printed by the state electoral commission or, where they were, that children were allegedly engaged in thumbprinting and result declarations.
“This travesty is unacceptable and erodes the democratic process,” the NPC remarked. “The people of Kano deserve an election that reflects their will, not one that diminishes Nigeria’s standing in the international community.”
The NPC urged authorities to investigate and rectify the alleged irregularities that marred the election.
“The National Patriotic Coalition stands with the people of Kano in their pursuit of true democracy,” Solomon stated.
“Governor Yusuf’s actions are a direct assault on democratic values, and his disregard for judicial orders is a threat to the rule of law. We call on him to take responsibility, to respect the Constitution, and to ensure that future elections are free, fair, and reflective of the people’s will.”
