EPL: He can’t score goals – Scholes not convinced about Joshua Zirkzee

Former Manchester United attacking midfielder, Paul Scholes has expressed doubt over the performance of Joshua Zirkzee at the club.

The criticism followed the player’s barren run in front of goal.

Zirkzee, a Dutch international, joined Manchester United from Bologna in the summer.

He scored against Fulham in his first game for Manchester United but has since failed to find the back of the net in nine games.

United have also struggled this season, winning just three of their 11 games across all competitions.

Speaking on SuperSport Studio after the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Sunday, Scholes insisted that the current striker options at Man United are not good enough.

“In forward areas especially, I just don’t think the quality is there. We go back to the most successful teams, they’re capable of scoring goals. What have we scored? Five goals in seven games,” the ex-England international said.

“Now we had three or four forwards who could get you 20 goals so you’re looking at 80 goals a season there and I just don’t see that in the forward line at Manchester United.

“Look, [Rasmus] Hojlund does alright but is he gonna score you 20 goals? I don’t think so. Zirkzee… what is he? Is he a No.9 or a No.10? Is he going to get you 20 goals? I don’t think so. I think they’re relying more on hope than actual proven quality and they spent so much money as well.”
