Vincent Kompany has revealed that an illness prevented Jamal Musiala from starting in Bayern Munich’s Champions League defeat to Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old continues to be one of Bayern’s standout performers this season and already has three goals and two assists this term.

Musiala completed a full game in the 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen last Saturday, however, he was only named as a substitute for Bayern’s trip to Villa Park on Wednesday evening.

The midfielder was brought on at half time to replace Kingsley Coman before Jhon Duran struck with 11 minutes remaining to secure a 1-0 win for Villa.

And speaking after his side’s defeat, Kompany revealed that the decision to drop Musiala to the bench was a forced change.

‘It had something to do with the last match,’ Kompany said.

‘He wasn’t feeling well for about two days, so we knew 90 minutes would be too long for him.

‘Maybe 45 minutes would be okay, that’s why we just played it safe and brought him on in the second half.

‘So the reason for that was because of a physical problem but it shouldn’t be another problem for the next match.’

Speaking about Musiala’s absence before the defeat, Kompany told DAZN: ‘We have to look at the workload a bit. The game against Leverkusen took a lot of energy.

‘If we feel that someone is not fresh, then we have the squad for that. Jamal has not felt so fit in the last two days. He can still come off the bench.’
