Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Femi Falana disclosed on Monday 9 September that the arrest of Comrade Joe Ajaero by the Department of State Services (DSS) was not linked to his previous police invitation.
Falana made this statement knownon during an interview with journalists in Abuja.
Ajaero, who serves as the President of the NLC, had previously been invited by the police over allegations concerning a “threat to public peace.”
However, the police invitation was subsequently rescheduled, allowing Ajaero more time before any further engagement with law enforcement officials.
Meanwhile, Ajaero was arrested by operatives of the DSS early Monday morning while en route to the United Kingdom.
According to Falana, Ajaero was on his way to attend the ongoing Trades Union Congress (TUC) Conference in London when he was apprehended at the airport by DSS operatives.
Falana expressed his concerns over the arrest, noting that no official reason has been provided by the DSS for detaining the labour leader.
He emphasized that after speaking with police authorities, it became clear that the arrest was not related to the previously scheduled police invitation.
“The invitation to Comrade Joe Ajaero by the police was rescheduled last week,” Falana said.
“I have contacted the police authorities. The arrest is not related to the police invitation.”
