Hon Obinna Aguocha, the representative of the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State, has raised concerns about an alleged planned protest aimed at discrediting him.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Aguocha claimed that the protest is being orchestrated by individuals who were defeated in the 2023 general election in the state.

According to the statement, which was signed by the media team of the Labour Party lawmaker, a group known as the Niger Delta Youth Peace Builders is allegedly being used to question Aguocha’s performance as a lawmaker and representative of his constituency.

“It has come to the attention of Hon. Obi Aguocha, that a little known and hastily put together group going by the name “Niger Delta Youth Peace Builders” is being sponsored by certain individuals defeated in the last general election and vowing to declare the Abia State governorship seat vacant in 2027, whilst fully being in cahoot with an aspirant to the Abia local government election, to conduct a protest and cast aspersions against Hon. Aguocha in Abuja on September 4th, 2024,” the statement reads.

Aguocha expressed bewilderment over the involvement of the Niger Delta group in the affairs of his constituency, stating that their actions appear to be politically motivated.

He acknowledged the group’s right to peaceful assembly and expression but urged them to ensure their protest remains peaceful and constructive.

“The Honourable member fully respects and recognizes their right to a peaceful assembly of citizens and of expression as enshrined in section 40 of 1999 constitution as amended.

“These rights are fundamental to our democracy. We encourage them to carry out their activities peacefully and in compliance with the extant laws,” the statement added.

The lawmaker defended his record, stating that he has worked diligently to secure infrastructure projects and human capital development opportunities in the 2024 budget for his constituents.

He also stated the rigorous process involved in the approval and implementation of government projects, clarifying that no funds are released directly to lawmakers.

Aguocha pointed out his commitment to transparency and accountability, citing his sponsorship of 15 bills and co-sponsorship of three others, including the South East Development Commission Act 2024.

He reassured his constituents of his continued dedication to their welfare, including the fair distribution of rice and fertilizer palliatives.

The lawmaker concluded by urging his constituents not to be swayed by false allegations and reiterated his commitment to serving under the leadership of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

“Ndi Abia knows who they are and has seen through them. Going back to Egypt is neither an option nor our portion in Jesus name,” he concluded.
