Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe died after being struck by a train at a railway station in Surrey.
At the opening of an inquest into Thorpe’s death, coroner Simon Wickens said the former cricketer died from ‘traumatic injuries’ after he was hit by a train on August 4.
Speaking at Surrey Coroner’s Court, Wickens said that Thorpe, a father of four, had died as a result of ‘multiple injuries’.
Wickens also said that British Transport Police officers identified Thorpe by his fingerprints the day after his death.
A statement from British Transport Police, released on August 5, read: ‘Officers were called to Esher railway station at 8.26am on 4 August to reports of a casualty on the tracks.
‘Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.’
Thorpe’s widow, Amanda, said in an interview with The Times on Monday that the former cricketer had attempted suicide two years ago.
‘Graham was renowned as someone who was very mentally strong on the field and he was in good physical health,’ she said.
‘But mental illness is a real disease and can affect anyone. Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better.
‘He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.’
Thorpe, who died at the age of 55, was widely regarded to be one of England’s finest ever batters.
He amassed a total of 6,744 runs and 16 centuries across 100 Test matches for England, while also notching up 21,000 runs during a 17-year county career.
