WAEC withholds over 200 results over exam malpractice

Following the release of the 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE, results, the West African Examination Council, WAEC, has revealed that the results of 215,267 candidates are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

A total of 1,805,216 candidates sat for the examination from 25,126 secondary schools across Nigeria.

Out of all the candidates who took the exam, 1,685,889 candidates (which is 93.39 percent) have had all their papers released, while 119,327 candidates (representing 6.61 percent) still have some subjects under processing.

The council mentioned that this represents a 4.37 percent decrease from the 16.29 percent seen in the 2023 WASSCE for school candidates.

In terms of performance analysis, 1,332,089 candidates (73.79 percent) achieved credit and above in at least five subjects (with or without English and/or Mathematics).

Additionally, 1,301,941 candidates (72.12 percent) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Comparing year-on-year data for this category, the 2024 WASSCE showed a 7.69 percent drop from the 79.81 percent pass rate observed in 2023.
