Former Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, Onengiyeofori George and supporters have carried out a protest against Governor Sim Fubara.

George and his supporters marched through the streets of the town with placards carrying the inscription: “Sim Fubara Can’t Continue to Act As He Likes” and “There’s No Vacancy in Asari-Toru Council.”

The former council chairman and his followers could be heard chanting songs in favour of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

His protest came despite an advisory against protests issued by the Rivers State Police Command.

The police had since last Tuesday taken over the council secretariats of the 23 LGAs of the State following the crisis that erupted over the three-year tenure expiration of the former LGA chairmen.

Last week, Fubara swore in new Caretaker chairmen following the expiration of the former chairmen.

The tenure expiration of the former chairmen had led to a crisis following their decision to elongate their tenure.

Despite the uproar, Fubara refused to elongate their tenure, stressing that Nigeria’s constitution had no provision for such tenure elongation.
