Harry Kane made two excuses for England’s drab display against Denmark after the Three Lions were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Qualification for the next round as group winners looked to be on the cards when Kane prodded his team ahead in the 18th minute.
The lead lasted only until 10 minutes before the break, however, when Morten Hjulmand powered home a long-range piledriver after Kane had needlesslyconceded possession.
A disappointing individual performance reached it’s almost inevitable conclusion 20 minutes from the end when Kane was replaced by Ollie Watkins.
For the second game in succession, England surrendered control having taken an early lead and on this occasion were punished for allowing their opponents back into the contest.
‘I think it’s something we’ve got to get better at. I think we’re starting games well but when the teams are dropping deeper we’re not quite sure how to get the pressure on and who’s going,’ said Kane.
‘In the second half we tried to change a little bit but it was difficult.
‘Credit to Denmark, they caused us some threats. Overall we’ve got to look back and see where we can improve.’
England, to some extent, were not helped by the state of the pitch at inside Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park stadium and Kane insisted the conditions made for a testing evening.
He said: ‘It was tough out there with the heat and the pitch. It wasn’t easy.’
Kane, somewhat worryingly added: ‘I think we’re struggling both with and without the ball. I think the pressure in both games hasn’t been right and with the ball hasn’t been good enough.
‘Everyone’s dropping below their levels a little bit. It was tough out there, but we’re calm. It wasn’t our greatest game but we got away with a point.’
