Five members of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Enugu State chapter, are to appear before a Federal High Court sitting in Enugu over alleged cyber stalking.
According to the Charge No: FHC/EN/CR/73/2024, the four doctors “all of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku Ozalla in Enugu State, within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, on the 10th, 11th and 24th day of February, 2023, did knowingly and intentionally sent messages through various WhatsApp platforms capable of causing injuries, insult, enmity, hatred, ill will, anxiety to the person of enlisted medical doctor colleagues in same work place and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act 2015.”
The arraignment of the doctors, which was earlier scheduled for 29th May, 2024, was later adjourned to 9th July, 2024, owing to a letter of excuse from one of the defendants on health grounds and the need to amend the name of one of the defendants.
Meanwhile, the development has attracted applause from many members of the association who say it would restore sanity.
Dr Chukwubuikem Ogbozo, Public Relations Officer, PRO, Enugu Doctors’ Community Concern, DCC, told journalists on Tuesday that the planned arraignment of the suspects was received with wild jubilation.
He said, “majority of doctors within the medical community commend the Executive Governor of the state, His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for an overhaul in the state’s judicial system for an unprecedented seamless justice delivery through the innovations of the Attorney General of Enugu state, Dr Kingsley Udeh.”
He described Udeh as a result-oriented quintessential workaholic.
“In Enugu State now, under the team player of the Executive Governor, the Ministry of Justice, via its Department of Public Prosecution, DPP, there exists a speedy process of administration of justice and protection of public rights.
“It has also been observed that the build up to this arraignment has brought decorum and civility within the medical community in Enugu State, even as we warm up for the NMA general election.
“It has now put in check the notorious defamatory political style adopted by some members as they now write what they can prove on social media.
“Recall that a similar situation of defamatory style of politics and misunderstandings that was unchecked four years ago resulted in crisis of international shame among doctors as they fought and got wounded at Okpara Square during the general election in the year 2020.
“Beyond the medical community, this arraignment will be sending a stern warning to some undesirable elements who usually misled the elites and the public by kick-starting defamatory stories which run the government down as they will now think twice before propagating their lies and unconfirmed stories,” Ogbozo declared.
