Manchester United have refused Argentina’s request to call Alejandro Garnacho up for this summer’s Olympics – despite pleas from the player himself.

Garnacho has been capped five times for Argentina having made his international debut last summer and has strengthened his case for a regular role with a fine campaign at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old could have a busy summer ahead with La Albiceleste in Copa America action with their campaign beginning on 20 June, running to 14 July should they reach the final.

Argentina’s Under-23 side will then compete in the Olympics in Paris, which runs from 25 July to 9 August.

Garnacho had hoped to compete in both tournaments with head coach Javier Mascherano deciding to call-up the 19-year-old.

However, TYC Sports report United have refused to release their player. Clubs are not obliged to release players for the Olympic campaign and despite Garnacho himself holding talks with Erik ten Hag, who remains in charge at Old Trafford for the time being.

But the report claims United’s management will not budge on their decision.

Garnacho’s involvement in the Olympics would almost certainly result in him missing the start of the new Premier League season.

The new campaign kicks off one week after the conclusion of the Olympics on 16 August, with any players involved in Paris expected to be handed a rest before returning to club action.

The report also states Chelsea are likely to take similar action with Enzo Fernandez, who Mascherano also wants as part of his Olympics squad.

Fernandez missed the end of the season to undergo surgery in order to be fit in time for the Copa America.

While the midfielder is also eager to take part, Argentina are not optimistic he will be permitted to join up.

Arsenal have taken similar action with defender William Saliba, refusing to allow him to join up with the French Olympics squad.
