The Programme Officer, Social and Behavioural Change in the organisation, Dr Nkoyo Umoh made the call in Calabar during their review and capacity strengthening meeting held in Calabar.
Mrs Umoh said gender issues encompass a whole range of challenges and disparities that arise from the social cultural and economic expectations placed on individuals based on their perceptions about gender.
She outlined gender issues to include; gender-based violence, gender inequality, reproductive rights and health, and workplace discrimination, among others.
According to her, types of gender-based violence include physical violence, sexual violence, emotional/psychological violence, and economic violence among others.
She reminded the media of their role in providing information on gender issues, creating awareness, influencing behavioural change, challenging stereotypes and unfriendly policies, and promoting gender equality and equity.
Mrs Umoh explained that in gender-responsive reporting, the media must ensure inclusivity, use neutral terms, protect the vulnerable, sources of information and avoid using stereotype images, among others.
