Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial waved an emotional goodbye to Manchester United fans after Wednesday night’s 3-2 win over Newcastle.

Varane did not feature in the match due to injury while Martial was also absent from the squad due to a lack of fitness.

But both men came out onto the pitch after the victory – United’s last home match of the season – to bid farewell to fans before they head for the exit door.

United announced this week that Varane will leave the club at the end of the season in what is expected to be a summer of major upheaval at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman joined United from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021 and will leave when his contract expires at the end of June.

Martial, meanwhile, is also set to depart at the end of the season when his deal runs out having been at the club for nine years.

After bidding farewell to fans, Varane waited for Old Trafford to empty out and decided to take a seat at the centre circle to take it all in.

‘Old Trafford, thank you,’ Varane said on Instagram while United posted on X: ‘Once a Red, always a Red.’

United fans have been writing messages to Varane on social media with @Afolabiolamide8 posting on X: ‘Thank you Raphael Varane. History will forever remember you.’

Varane sent his own message to United fans this week and said: ‘It’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt.

‘The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Manchester United player was insane; the atmosphere was amazing.

‘I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents. For my kids, it’s home here. It’s going to be a special place for me for life.

‘When the fans go to Wembley it’s something they remember for life. To share that moment with them [winning the Carabao Cup] was absolutely amazing.’
