The Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, which was established in 2021, has got its first Chancellor.
He is Shehu of Dikwa, His Royal Highness, Alh. Ibrahim Ibn El-Kanemi,
At the investiture ceremony held on Thursday, 9th May, 2024, which also doubles as the second matriculation ceremony of the University, the Shehu of Dikwa,i, was decorated as the pioneer Chancellor of the institution.
The Vice Chancellor, FUHSI, Prof. Akeem Olawale Lasisi, in his welcome address, commended the efforts of the Federal Government under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for appointing the foremost traditional ruler as the first Chancellor for the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila- Orangun.
According to him, the appointment of a Chancellor came at the right time because his administration requires the pedigree, strength and support of His Royal Highness to move the citadel of learning to international prominence.
” I congratulate you, sir, for being the choice of the Visitor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and I wish your Royal Highness a meritorious tenure as you contribute to the development of the nation’s tertiary education,” he said.
The occasion also marked the second matriculation event of the young university as 672 students were matriculated into the thirteen programmes of the university. While congratulating the matriculants, Prof. Lasisi said, ”I congratulate the matriculants and your parents for being the successful ones among the 2069 applicants, who applied to this university, I must especially felicitate the female students, who constitute the majority this year.
The admitted female students are 429 and this figure accounts for 63.7% of the total number of matriculated students. Furthermore, he stated that the university places high premium on character and he urged all students to eschew all forms of vices and negativity as the university has zero tolerance for any form of misconduct.
”In terms of infrastructure, my administration has seen to the construction of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the University Health Centre, the Science Laboratory Building, the University Library, and the FUHSI Teaching Hospital.
”As I am making this speech, these great edifices are getting ready for use by the next semester while the others, which include the Senate Building, the College of Medicine and the Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory are speedily getting ready as well,” he declared.
The Chancellor, in his acceptance speech after his elaborate decoration in line with the university culture said, ” I will like to express appreciation to the Visitor, President and Commander -in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for finding me worthy of this appointment as the first Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun. It is, indeed, a great honour.
”He also congratulated the matriculating students as he urged them to embrace every opportunity that comes their way. He said, ”Seize the moment, dare to dream big and never underestimate the power of your own potential.
”Earlier, a matriculation lecture was delivered by Prof. Akinsola Adewale, titled: “Leveraging on the Emergence of Specialized Medical Universities to Bridge the Performance Gap in Nigeria’s Health Delivery”. Dignitaries in attendance included the Governor of Osun State, who was represented by the Special Assistant on School Monitoring, Hon Akin Ajetunmobi; the former Governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande; Dr. Yusuf Alli, SAN; members of the National Assembly from the zone; traditional rulers, captains of industries; Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB, Public Communications Advisor, and Ashura Abdullahi, JAMB, Assistant Director, Operations; and other eminent personalities
