Gary Neville and Roy Keane slam Casemiro after Leandro Trossard scores for Arsenal against Man Utd | Football

Gary Neville took aim at Casemiro after the makeshift defender’s ‘basic error’ allowed Leandro Trossard to make the breakthrough in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Hosts United started the game promisingly but fell behind after Ben White capitalised on a poor clearance from Andre Onana and found Kai Havertz down the right flank in the 20th minute, with Casemiro keeping the German onside at Old Trafford.

Trossard sensed the opportunity and sprinted in behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka before slotting Havertz’s cross home from close range, sending Arsenal’s away support into raptures in Manchester.

The Gunners kept United at bay to take maximum points away from the Theatre of Dreams, giving them a one-point lead over champions Manchester City heading into the final week of the Premier League season.

Casemiro – filling in at centre-back due to United’s injury woes in defence – was on the receiving end of heavy criticism in the wake of the side’s 4-0 thrashing at Crystal Palace last time out, with Jamie Carragher even telling the Brazilian to ‘call it a day’ in the summer.

And after Casemiro’s questionable positioning was largely to blame for Trossard’s goal, Neville tore into the former Real Madrid midfielder – claiming he should have sensed the danger given his ‘experience in the game’.

‘Casemiro has taken some criticism in these last couple of weeks and he’s going to get a little bit more,’ the ex-United and England right-back said while on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports.

‘Brilliant for Arsenal and those Arsenal fans in that far corner will have recognised that this has been a difficult first 20 minutes.

‘He goes to split wide to get on the ball, Casemiro.

‘As soon as Onana goes that way, Casemiro has to get up. Look at him jog.

‘And then as you see that ball getting played back down that far side, he’s got to get out quicker than that to play him offside and once he doesn’t, he’s in trouble.

Neville added: ‘Trossard does what every good wide player will do as it’s coming in from that opposite side.

‘He makes that diagonal run inside the full-back, Wan Bissaka is caught out and it’s a simple one in the end.

‘Casemiro, with his experience in the game, he must have seen that that ball had broken down on that far side where Havertz was, just to get up a bit quicker to play him offside.’

According to Neville, there was ‘no excuse’ for Casemiro’s lackadaisical defending in the lead-up to Trossard’s strike.

‘There’s no doubt it’s not going to be as easy for him playing at centre-back,’ Neville continued.

‘Roy Keane, Paul Merson and Wayne Rooney in the studio before the game said he needed protecting more. He’s had that protection in the first 25 minutes of this match and that is a basic error.

‘As the ball gets cleared up the pitch you go to sort of play out from the back, you’ve got to get up quicker and in line with the other defenders and he just ambles out. There’s really no excuse for that.’

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was equally critical of Casemiro in the Sky Sports studio at the half-time break, accusing the five-time Champions League winner of failing to ‘do the basics right’.

‘Casemiro has to sprint out, of course he has to,’ Keane said.

I don’t know what he was doing there because I’m not even sure he needed to make an angle for the goalkeeper. When it goes back to the goalkeeper, why is he making a silly angle as if he’s going to get it there?

‘I’m not saying sprinting like a 100m sprinter, but you’ve got to get up the pitch! Just move your feet a little bit quicker.

‘He’s got to look across and go, “We’re in trouble here!”. This game is hard enough. You have to do the basics right and they’ve not done the basics right at this moment in time.

‘Again, an experienced player… he’s got to get up the pitch.’
