Manchester United have clinched the Women’s FA Cup trophy for the first time in the club’s history with a 4-0 victory over Tottenham on Sunday.
Ella Toone opened the scoring for the Red Devils just before half-time at Wembleywith a sumptuous, curling finish which rose and looped past Rebecca Spencer.
Rachel Williams, who left Spurs to join United in 2022, doubled the lead for Marc Skinner’s side in the second half with a superb header from a deep free-kick.
United then found themselves 3-0 up before the hour mark following a huge goalkeeping error from Spencer – as Lucia Garcia slotted into an empty net – and the Spaniard got on the scoresheet again to spark wild celebrations at Wembley.
It is the first time in 12 years that a club outside of the WSL big three – Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City – have lifted the Women’s FA Cup trophy after United painfully lost to Emma Hayes’ Blues in last year’s final.
United, who headed into this year’s final as the favourites, dominated the first half and were finally rewarded with virtually the last kick before the break as England international Toone shifted past Eveliina Summanen and fired her shot from outside the box into the top corner.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Katie Zelem’s free-kick from distance found Williams in the box who climbed highest and found the back of the net.
Just before the hour mark, United had a three-goal cushion as Spurs ‘keeper Spencer passed the ball straight to the feet of Garcia, who easily slotted home.
Lionesses star Beth England hit the crossbar for Spurs as the north Londoners attempted to reduce United’s lead but on 74 minutes, Garcia made it 4-0 after some sloppy defending allowed her to power home from inside the box.
No more goals followed as United, who only reached the top-flight of women’s football in 2019, made history by landing the iconic trophy for the very first time.
‘Manchester United have been stronger in every department,’ Former Lioness Izzy Christiansen told the BBC. ‘They haven’t been incredible but they have been efficient.
‘This performance from Manchester United is the epitome of how I’d envisage how a Manchester United team has to perform.
‘They have been resilient in defence and had that sprinkling of magic when it’s been needed.’
