The Dutchman, formerly of Manchester City, has thrived under Xabi Alonso’s Bundesliga-winning side.
The 23-year-old scored 10 goals and provided eight assists as Leverkusen won the first German league title in the club’s history this term.
Frimpong had been a target under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021, following two successful years with Celtic.
Diogo Dalot has impressed at right-back this term, but he’s often been asked to play at left-back given injuries to Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw.
United therefore want competition on the right side, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka a possible departure this summer.
Bayern Munich are said to be the main competitors for Frimpong’s signature and could rival United for his signature.
Frimpong has a £34m release clause in his contract, but it must be triggered before the European Championships.
United’s budget is likely to be severely restricted this summer, given they are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League.
The club are already wary of their Financial Fair Play position.
