Ekiti govt begins enforcement of anti-open grazing law

The Ekiti State Government has commenced the enforcement of the Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing Law, 2016.

Rtd. Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, chairman of the Farmers/Herders Peace Committee in Ekiti State, disclosed this at a function on Wednesday.

Ogundana emphasised that the state government would not hesitate to punish any offenders contravening the law.

The move, according to him, was to curb any form of threat of insecurity and wanton damage of farmlands in the state, stressing that if the Farmers/Herders issues are not resolved citizens would subsequently suffer food crisis.

Similarly, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade said the government is committed to attaining and maintaining food security in the state.

He called on herders to properly guide their cattle and peacefully coexist with crop farmers, warning that the destruction of crops, farmlands and valuable properties by herders will not be tolerated.

Newspot reports that the anti-open grazing law prohibits cattle grazing at night, the wielding of firearms or other offensive weapons by herdsmen, and the destruction of properties and farmlands by cattle.
