Gary Neville felt that Premier League referee Andrew Madley was ‘played’ by Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana in Sunday’s Manchester derby.

United went 1-0 up at the Etihad thanks to Marcus Rashford’s wondergoal but City scored three times in the second half to turn the match around.

In the 65th minute of the clash, when the score was locked at 1-1, Onana appeared to go down with cramp and was seen rubbing his hamstring.

Madley stopped the game so Onana could receive treatment and during the break in play, United players raced over to the touchline for tactical instructions.

‘Onana has now gone down with cramp,’ former United defender Neville said on commentary duties for Sky Sports.

‘Have we seen that before? Can a goalkeeper get cramp? I think the referee might be being played. The goalkeeper can’t go off like an outfield player.’

Onana’s tactical injury backfired, though, as City went on to score twice to secure local bragging rights and take all three points.

After the match, United manager Erik ten Hag snapped at a question in his pre-match conference when it was put to him that the Red Devils only managed one shot on target against City and have scored the same amount as Luton this term.

‘I don’t think it is a good question today,’ the Dutchman said. ‘As you see from January we scored many goals. I think we are really progressing on that side. Our frontline is absolutely a threat.

‘Rasmus Hojlund is getting back. But Garnacho, Rashford and Bruno behind – they are in good form and can score goals, they will create chances. I think we can score more goals and we can score enough goals to win football games.’
