The 38-year-old was sacked at Birmingham City in January, after just 83 days in charge at the club.
The United legend remains determined to forge out a career for himself in management as a head coach.
But Rooney says he would be willing to take a different role – as an assistant – if the right offer was made.
And the former Everton ace says he would ‘walk’ to the Etihad to work with Guardiola as his assistant.
Asked by Gary Neville on the Overlap, sponsored by Sky Bet, if he would consider becoming an assistant manager, Rooney said: ‘It depends. If Pep Guardiola comes in and asks me to be his assistant, you’d walk there!
‘But if you see what Arteta is doing now at Arsenal, I strongly believe a lot of that is from learning what Guardiola was doing and so it depends on what the situation is.’
Rooney famously handed in a transfer request at Manchester United in 2010.
Manchester City, who had yet to win a Premier League title, were in the running to sign Rooney.
Rooney denies his decision to hand in a transfer request was due to interest from City.
‘There was Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea (as well as City),’ Rooney said.
