Dan Ashworth has asked to leave Newcastle United, with Manchester United wanting to appoint him as sporting director, but serious complications remain.

The Daily Mail report that Ashworth has now asked to leave the Magpies, but the Red Devils must either pay a significant compensation fee or wait for the end of his extremely long gardening leave.

If Manchester United want to wait out that gardening leave they are likely to be waiting until 2026, with the period written into his Newcastle contract thought to be close to two years.

The Telegraph report that if the Red Devils want Ashworth in the much more immediate future then they will have to agree a compensation fee, which is likely to be ‘in excess of £20m.’

It would be an enormous amount for a deal of this nature, but Manchester United may feel they have no choice but to come to an agreement rather than wait such a long period to get Ashworth in.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Manchester United’s 2-1 win at Luton on Sunday, club legend Gary Neville said it was ‘imperative’ that the Red Devils get a sporting director in before the summer.

‘It’s imperative that Manchester United for the next transfer window get someone in place,’ he said. ‘If you get another transfer window wrong you might blow another £100m, so it’s important you get the right people in place.’

Despite complications remaining, the Daily Mail report states that ‘developments are expected to come to a head in the coming days’ with Manchester United having to make a decision on their next move.

The Athletic report that formal contact is yet to be made between the two clubs.

However, now Ashworth has told Newcastle he wants to leave, that will change in the very near future.
