Manchester United need to pay significant compensation to poach Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United ahead of an expected agreement between the clubs.
Ashworth has decided to leave Newcastle in order to become the first ever Sporting Director at Old Trafford.
He was identified by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe as the best candidate in the country for the role.
Newcastle had hoped to convince Ashworth to stay, but he has an existing relationship with Sir Dave Brailsford.
According to the Daily Mail, United are expected to reach an agreement with Newcastle as early as next week.
But it will be costly for the Red Devils, with The Athletic reporting that they will be made to pay ‘significant compensation’ to the Magpies.
United are said to be so confident of appointing Ashworth that they haven’t even sounded out other candidates for the job.
A head of recruitment is expected to follow Ashworth’s appointment at Old Trafford.
John Murtough, United’s head of football, could be moved to an administrative role.
However, it is also possible that the former Everton chief could leave the club entirely.
