Job description: Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) has been operating in the north-east of Nigeria since 2017, delivering humanitarian assistance and conflict-affected areas. As a hybrid programme, NCA works closely with national partners but also implements its projects in WASH and GBV/ASRH operationally. The country programme is embedded in the UN-led response in the BAY-states (Borno, Adamawa and Yobe), which reflects its funding base. The Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF-OCHA), UNICEF and UNFPA are important partners. The main donor is NMFA via the SPA.
As our new Country Director, you will be situated in Maiduguri, Borno, where you will lead the country office with currently 40 national staff members. You will directly line manage the office’s senior management team and a few other staff members including 4 expatriate colleagues. You will live together with your colleagues in the Maiduguri guesthouse.
Next to ensuring good strategic leadership and day to day management of the country office including representation, is working on further diversification of the portfolios funding base.
You will skilfully represent programme priorities to donors, national and regional partners while providing effective leadership to the senior management team. You will make use of your excellent communications skills in retaining and developing relations, internally and externally with the head office in Oslo, a strong commitment to teamwork and accountability, and thrive in evolving and challenging security environments. Travelling between Maiduguri and Abuja is an important necessity for the role.

The position is a one-year contract with possible extension. NCA Nigeria is a non-family duty station with a current 8-weeks R&R cycle. NCA will provide you with housing and comprehensive insurance.
Duties and responsibilities
- Ensure quality development of the humanitarian portfolio including programme planning, reporting and cooperation between the consortium’s actors.
- Fundraise, network, maintain and further develop relations with external stakeholders, government representatives, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Abuja, donors and potential new donors, relevant civil society networks and private sector actors.
- Anti-corruption work.
- Commit to maintain a positive team environment and build excellent people management.
Qualifications
- Proven strong management skills.
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in humanitarian responses, including first management experience in vulnerable contexts.
- Experience with institutional donors and fundraising.
- Demonstrated experience multi-tasking and success in securing funding for country programmes.
- Demonstrated experience in line-management of international and national staff.
- Master’s degree or equivalent in relevant subject including but not limited to development, social sciences, humanitarian assistance and management. Extended relevant experience may compensate for an academic degree.

- Comfortable in participating in church- and multi-religious networks but also in UN coordination.
- Good at networking and maintaining professional relationships.
