The bizarre incident occurred after Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr side lost 2-0 to Al-Hilal in the final of the Riyadh Season Cup – a mid-season friendly tournament – in Saudi Arabia.
There were strange scenes even before kick-off as, inexplicably, WWE Hall of Famer, The Undertaker, was called upon to hold the trophy aloft at Riyadh’s 30,000-seater Kingdom Arena while the two teams lined up on the pitch.
One of sport’s great competitors, Ronaldo will undoubtedly have been desperate to add yet another piece of silverware to his trophy-laden CV, but a pair of first-half goals from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Salem Aldawsari sealed a comfortable win for Al-Hilal.
Ronaldo’s frustration turned to anger as the evening wore on, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner clearly less than impressed with the officiating on show across the match – as rival supporters taunted him with chants of ‘Messi, Messi, Messi!’ in the stands.
Shortly after the final whistle, the Portuguese threw his toys out the pram and made it clear he would rather have been anywhere else as he angrily gesticulated towards an official who appeared to get in his way during the honorary pass.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United attacker then directed his fury towards the crowd after a couple of scarves rained down from the stands while he made his way towards the tunnel.
In the clip, which has spread like wildfire across social media, Ronaldo was struck on the head by one of the scarves and the 39-year-old reacted by shoving it down his crotch and tossing it back where it came from. As you do.
It remains to be seen if Ronaldo will face any punishment for his petulant behaviour both during and after the match.
Al-Nassr face Al-Fayha in the AFC Champions League on Wednesday and the 2016 European Championship winner will hope he is cleared to play a part at Riyadh’s Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium.
Last month, Ronaldo jumped to the defence of the Saudi Pro League, claiming it was a better standard of football than Ligue 1 where he formerly plied his trade with Paris Saint-Germain.
‘To be honest, I think the Saudi League is not worse than the French league, in my opinion,’ he said at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.
‘In the French league I think you have two, three teams with a good level. In Saudi now I think it’s more competitive.
‘They can say whatever they want, it’s just my opinion and I played there one year so I know what I’m talking about. But I think right now we are better than the French league, we still improve.’
Ronaldo’s contract at Al-Nassr is reported to be worth an eye-watering £177million-a-year, which breaks down as around £3.4m-a-week – the highest football salary in history.
The legendary forward, who turned 39 earlier this week, is tied into a deal with Al-Nassr until 2025.
