The Place of Education in the promotion of peace (I) — Our Security, Our Peace by Prof. O.E Bassey

“Education promotes independent thinking and provides opportunities for fresh ideas. Independent thinkers try to make sense of the world and form their own conclusions rather than blindly accepting others’ opinions. Independent thinkers may be less prone to join violent groups or be followers, instead serving as leaders for constructive change and action.”
Education, for long, has always been touted as the bedrock of civilization, but right in the pivot of civilization itself is the place of peace, hence, the
inseparable synergy between the duo for the realization of a developed society.
It is important a society places a premium on education if it is intent in the perpetuation of peace within its borders, no tool is as sustainable to the agenda of peace as education.
Here are ten ways education helps promote peace:
Confidence and hope booster
As early as 500 B.C., Confucius stated that “education breeds confidence.” Confidence fosters hope. “Hope breeds peace. Confidence is defined as the belief in one’s ability to succeed at anything, as well as a sense of self-assurance. Knowledge is a powerful confidence booster; it allows one to feel accomplished, be more confident, and grow in unexpected ways. This confidence and self-assurance, in turn, inspires drive and optimism—or hope, as Confucius calls it—to work toward peace.
Independent thinkers
Education promotes independent thinking and provides opportunities for fresh ideas. Independent thinkers try to make sense of the world and form their own conclusions rather than blindly accepting others’ opinions. Independent thinkers may be less prone to join violent groups or be followers, instead serving as leaders for constructive change and action.
Promotion of communication skills
In the classroom, students are frequently expected to speak or read in front of others, express their thoughts, and form small groups to collaborate on projects. This is how communication skills are developed, and communication is the key to conflict resolution. Quality education can provide students with the tools they need to solve challenges in their communities or on a global scale.
Fostering empathy and tolerance
With quality education, individuals  can gain empathy and understanding. They are likely to be more accepting of others and less inclined to resort to violence to resolve issues.
Cultivation of Respect
With education, respect is taught. Students learn to respect their professors and classmates. They are taught to let others talk and express their thoughts, not to interrupt, how to cope with stress, and how to behave in a group. This acquired respect for other humans can be used on a national and worldwide basis, with respect for all lives, not just those with similar religious beliefs and backgrounds.
Isaiah 54:13: “All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace.”
It is in this vein, I am delighted to inform you that come October, 1, 2024, we at NISSI Safety Management Institute: An Institute famous for Peace Leadership will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary.
