Chelsea believe Liverpool are responsible for their young mascot being ignored and left on his own at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were swept aside by Liverpool on Merseyside on Tuesday night with Jurgen Klopp’s side easing to a 4-1 win.
Before kick-off, Chelsea players came under fire after their match day mascot was left on his own in the middle of the pitch while the Liverpool anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ rang out around the stadium.
A video shared on social media showed the mascot being left to fend for himself by the Chelsea players who had wandered away to prepare themselves for kick-off.
The young fan was seen looking around for guidance before a cameraman eventually approached him with an arm around the shoulder.
Chelsea players were berated by football fans on social media with Ben Chilwell, captaining the Blues on the night in the absence of Reece James, particularly targeted.
The Telegraph report however Chelsea feel it was Liverpool’s responsibility to attend to the mascot, not their players.
Every Premier League club has a matchday coordinator who looks after mascots from both clubs with the Wolves mascot to be under the care of Chelsea’s matchday coordinator on Sunday in their next match.
The Chelsea mascot on Tuesday night was left to eventually walk off the Anfield pitch on his own.
The report adds that Premier League protocols mean matchday coordinators do not go out onto the pitch, but instead wait on the touchline when the mascots walk out with the players.
Those individuals are then expected to look after the youngsters when they return to the sidelines with club captains traditionally expected to take responsibility while the mascots are on the pitch.
Chelsea have invited the young fan to be mascot for another game with the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust also reaching out to be put in touch with his family.
