Despite the Kuti family’s contribution to the establishment of the Anglican church in the nation, he claimed to be a traditional African (juju) worshipper rather than a Christian.

During the colonial era, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, Seun Kuti’s great-grandfather, and Josiah Ransome-Kuti, his grandpa, served as Anglican preachers.

The Afrobeats musician declared that although his family helped spread Christianity throughout Nigeria, he is not a Christian.

He encouraged other Africans to return to their ancestral beliefs in the statement, which he made on a recent episode of the Spill With Phyna podcast.

Seun Kuti said,

“Na my family start the Anglican side of Christianity in this country, if you look back at it. We are among the pioneers.

So, we’ve been there, we’ve done that and we’ve moved on. And we hope Africans can follow suit. I don’t go to church. Na juju me I dey do.”
