The United Marketers Association Potiskum (UMAPO) has announced that it has finalised arrangements for a peaceful protest against the recent move by Potiskum Local Government Council to revoke shops and stalls in the popular Potiskum market.

Nasiru Alhaji Mato, Chairman of the Association, disclosed this in a statement released to the press in Potiskum on Tuesday.

Mato alleged that the Potiskum Local Government Council is indifferent to the plight of its citizens, particularly the business community.

He also accused the council of waging a war against the business community in the town by issuing quit notices and revocation letters to its members who have been legally occupying shops and stalls for their legitimate businesses for over 50 years.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the council’s decision to shut them out of legitimate business, Mato cited the eviction of businesses operating within the old Potiskum Local Government Secretariat and the NPN Market shops, including the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

In response to what they view as a dictatorial and unacceptable decision, he explained that “Members of UMAPO have collectively agreed to close down all markets within Potiskum town on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.” He noted that the closure is aimed at demonstrating their displeasure with the Council’s decision, as all entries into the markets will be shut down during the protest.

In a swift reaction to the development, Fika Emirate Council, Potiskum, in a statement titled: “RE- POTISKUM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND BUSINESS COMMUNITY (UMAPO) FEUD OVER REVOCATION OF PLACES,” appealed for caution to prevent the situation from degenerating.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, it indicated that the Emir called on all parties to resolve the issue amicably.

According to the statement, “The Emir is currently in touch with the State Government on the matter and it will be resolved amicably. The Emir will never allow anyone to create chaos among his people; therefore, we’re advising the public to remain calm as we are on top of the situation and care about the plight of our people.”
