Onana, United’s No.1 goalkeeper, was named in Cameroon’s 27-man squad on Thursday for the tournament which gets underway on January 13.
Should he and his country make it to the final on February 11 – he could miss up to six games for United – including the FA Cup third-round tie at Wigan Athletic.
Cameroon have a training camp next week but according to reports, Onana is trying to delay his call-up so he can play in the FA Cup against Wigan.
Ten Hag was quizzed about the situation in his press conference on Friday and was asked if United’s game against Nottingham Forest on Saturday would be Onana’s last before AFCON.
‘The situation is that we’re talking, we have good relationships with all the federations,’ the Dutchman said.
‘It’s [also] about Sofyan Amrabat (Morocco) and Hannibal Mejbri (Tunisia) as well as Andre. We are talking with them.’
Meanwhile, Ten Hag has also revealed that he is yet to talk to Sir Jim Ratcliffe after INEOS’ 25 per cent stake in United was finally secured over the festive period.
‘The schedule is so condensed I didn’t have the time so far to speak with them but it will come,’ Ten Hag added. ‘I look forward [to it].
‘They want to work with me, I want to work with them, we will have the conversations, the meetings. We will see.
‘I’m focused on the game so far, so I said no [to discussions]. In this moment I don’t want to have distractions.
‘In the coming days, weeks, there will be time for us, then I’ll know more. I think it’s a good thing, it’s very positive.
‘We are looking really forward to work together. INEOS wants to work with me in this structure and I want to work with them.
‘We always want to win, it doesn’t matter who is the leader.
‘We are appointed here in this area, we need a winning culture no matter who is in the lead, no matter who is the owner. But, of course, owners can inspire you.’
United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table after 19 games played in the 2023-24 campaign.
