The right-back pulled up during Chelsea’s defeat to Everton at Goodison Park earlier this month with a recurrence of a previous hamstring strain.
The club have sought a second opinion on James’ injury after initial scans were inconclusive as to the best route forward.
More often than not, hamstring injuries simply require a period of healing and non-invasive treatment.
But the Daily Mail say Chelsea have been advised to operate on James’ hamstring and he will undergo an operation in Finland in the coming days.
It’s the worst-case scenario for James, who is now facing up to four months on the sidelines.
That would see James returning to action in April at best, and it puts his spot at Euro 2024 with England under threat.
James has been plagued with injuries over the last 18 months and he’s already missed three months of the season.
Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele has been similarly plagued by hamstring injuries during his career.
Dembele also visited Finland to be seen by specialists, and he underwent a similar procedure to what James will.
It’s felt that an operation is best for James to try and cure the problem once and for all.
